We are moving towards Web 2.0 and next generation apps that will be making use of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to deliver their services. SOA helps us to harness full power that Web 2.0 has to offer.
Innovative use of Ajax, Java Script, HTML, CSS and XML has led to creation of application that is blurring the lines between Web Application and Stand alone application. Product Configurator in Siebel has been using CSS, DOM, HTML, Java Script to power its UI but things that we can achieve in Siebel using these are pretty limited and are very complex if possible.
In Siebel 8 Out of Box (OOB) and Siebel 188.8.131.52 Product Configurator capabilities have been extended with the help of SOA and web services. This avatar of product Configurator can be called as Web Configurator.
Web Configurator is nothing but a set of Web Services that have been provided that can help external applications to get product data from Siebel.
They can manipulate product data using these web services. Now this in results means that you no longer need to use UI of Product Configurator available in Siebel but you can have an external application based on Java, .Net etc use these web services and render that data in the way you want and then update or create records accordingly in Siebel.
This can mean a lot nicer and slick UI (you have seen UI of Web Application lately haven’t you??) powered by Java or .Net for a better user experience and CRM capabilities of Siebel to manage that data which is indeed a great thing.
So, Looking forward to seeing lots of novel implementations coming out of this development and already we are working on one such requirement that will use this capability. I will put the details of the requirement under case study section soon.
