Estimating Siebel requirements

Few days back I was having discussion on a requirement with one of my friends. I had to provide an estimate for that requirement.

The requirement involved creation of a new Business Component (basically copying an existing BC, giving it a new name and making some field changes in it), View, Applet and a Link.

I thought that I can put this together in 8 hours or may be less but my friend suggested that you should be providing estimates based on some standard and not how quickly you think you can complete a requirement. You might not be the one who might be working on it in the end.

Then it struck me that how cool it would be to have standard way of estimating a Siebel requirement otherwise there can be lot of variation in estimates depending on person who is doing it. Also this kind of standard can come in really handy in case you are working on a new project and need to provide initial estimates.

I was thinking that atleast big companies must be using some kind of model or a standard template or may be even a tool to actually do this, but who can provide more information about this???

Who else then such an experience rich community of Siebel Unleashed :)

So, guys please do share your experience about Siebel Estimation. I would love to know and develop some kind of standard model (if not already there) helping us in providing Siebel estimates easily and quickly.

Waiting…………….

    Hi,

    Started a good thread.

1# In my experience, the estimations are done with a view of complexity and approximate number of changes needed (for any requirement).

2# At the same time, the estimation should consider the time taken for design, build and unit testing (and not merely testing), since and end-to-end delivery requirs efforts in all the phases.

3# It is noteworthy that the estimation templates used by orgazniations also include some buffers (over and above the efforts provided #2). These buffers typically help meet the unforseen.

'll try to post some more details around exact estimation model shortly.

    Hi,

We usually dont have any standard template to calculate the estimates for any of the configuration.

It happens manytimes that, we give our estimates based on our capability to develop it but little extra... Lets say, I want 6 hrs for something to be completed, then I can give 9-10 hrs..so that if it goes to someother developer, they can manage with that.

But I really doubt, if any of the company uses such templates to do the estimate. I work in Agile model..so if its been happening in Waterfall model..I am not aware of.

    Thanks,
    Prakash
